Very impressed after a signal torture test

Very impressed after a signal torture test
I setup a voice recorder next to one radio and then went out on campus (120 acres) in a golf cart intentionally trying to lose the signal. Basements, bathrooms, elevators, parking structures, metal buildings, hillsides, canyons. Much to my amazement ALL of my transmissions were received loud and clear. The QT Noise Filter isn't very well documented. It puts the radio to sleep and will only wake up if the calling party presses the 🎶call button, then it rings like a phone. The virbracall feature works well for this too, getting your attention when someone is calling The included rechargeable batteries are convenient, but the life is just average... I'd highly recommend using some 2550mAh Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA rechargeable batteries and a charger. The radio lasts for days with Eneloops. For freezing climates Energizer AA Lithium Batteries are best, and have great shelf life too.

For what they are they work great. Only complaint is when you go to talk it is 1/4 second wait time before you can talk. Not even a big deal. I'm a manager at a rock yard and bought these for my employees. Everything is going really well so far... Except for the fact that our old fart driver refuses to wear one. The clips are extremely strong and radios are very durable. Like I said, I work at a rock yard and these take a serious beating. The transmission range is great on the property. Line-of-site at about 5 acres straight back. If people go to the gas station 1/8 mile down the road it cuts out completely. Expect to use these in a scenario like mine.. Nothing more. Unless your scenario is peak-to-peak on two separate mountains.. very unlikely. I also bought myself the Red/white T480 because it has FM radio and I can't live without that at my job. The battery life is great for such small radios. I'm getting about 10+ hours per day with mixed usage on my red/white T480 and the T460 blue/black radios stay charged for 15+ hours with mild chatter. They do take a long time to charge but we plug them in at 5pm and they're ready by 7:30am. That's all I care about. If you run your battery out expect 10+ hour charge times as well.. no big deal in my case. I could go on an on but I think I'll stop here. I bought 5 of the blue/black T480 and all arrived perfect and 0 defects. I'm a computer guy and very critical of build quality and durability. These live up to my expectations 100%. If you are a manager and using these with your employees.. Spring and get the Red/white T480 for the FM radio. You deserve it after putting up with their crap. Plus you'll have a different color and people will know who the boss is..lol. I hope this review helped.

A friend of mine had bought these and hadn't opened them yet and I liked the look of them, plus the product features on the box looked amazing. Weather channel, emergency beacon and broadcast button, High and Low TX buttongs, full range volume knob, durable and weather proof body/case design are all just what is on the outside. I researched and these are the best of the T-400 series. All the sellers were out for the longest time so I ordered another pair and right out of the box they were defective so I returned my package and waited for these to come available. WORTH THE WAIT. I charged them the night before and decided to take them to work with me the next day to test them out. I work in construction as a HVAC controls tech and there are times where I will work with a fellow tech to perform start up and check out of equipment. I was in a 6 story building with concrete floors and I could communicate with my partner who was on the first floor and I was up on a ladder on 6 in front of the unit. Clear as day. The vibrate feature is also really cool when it is loud and you might not hear an all call. Ran all day without a dent in the battery life. Can't recommend this product enough to anyone. Looking forward to bringing them up to the mountains.

We bought these radios as replacements for old (20 years at least) Motorola talkabouts that finally wore out. As our older Motorola talkabouts began to show age, a few years ago we bought some replacement walkie talkies in the lower price ranges and were VERY disappointed with the quality and range, and could not use them. So we now decided to try these higher cost Motorola Talkabouts in hopes that we could find a good replacement for our old Motorola talkabouts.

We bought a set of two in October 2016, and a 2nd set of two in November 2016. We got both sets from Amazon warehouse deals. The first set just had very little damage to the packaging and appeared to never have been opened. The 2nd set had cut open packages and had appeared to be used. But with the extended Amazon Warehouse deals, we thought we would be fine. It is now February 2017.

At first, we thought we had found a good replacement for our old Motorola Talkabouts. We liked the following features of these new walkie talkies:
--We have kids ages 9 and 12 and the learning curve to use all of the Motorola radios is easy to master for that age group.
--Very good range with our kids as they play at various homes in our neighborhood and when our family goes skiing.
--Kids liked the call feature that has both sound and vibrate.
--We liked the overall sturdiness of these radios.
--In 4 months we have liked and had no problems with the rechargeable batteries. We also like the USB connectors, they take up a lot less space than older charging bases.
--They seemed to work well in cold temperatures. We routinely used them while skiing in Michigan with 15-20 deg temperatures and had no issues except for one described below.

However, now that the extended Amazon Warehouse deals warranty (3 month warranty) has ended we now have issues with these radios. Both of these issues are with the 2nd set that we purchased. Our problems are as follows:
      1. In very cold temperatures, one time, one of the radios would not stop vibrating when it was called. We tried turning it on and off and it was still vibrating, even when turned off! We ended up taking the batteries out and it finally stopped. It seemed to "reset" worked fine after the batteries were taken out and put back in. We haven't had that issue again and have been back in the cold several times. I was glad we were home when this happened and not skiing because it would have been difficult to get a screwdriver and remove the battery cover if we had been skiing.
      2. Now we have another issue with one of the radios. This radio is definitely part of the 2nd set I purchased, but I am not sure if it is the same one that had the problem described in #1 above or not. When we press the Mode, Menu, "+", "-", and Mon buttons the unit does a low pitch beep and the function does not work. The only button that still works on the front is the call button (with music note symbol.) The talk buttons on the side of the unit still work. I have tried taking the batteries out and this does not resolve the issue. I have tried to read the Motorola site and there doesn't seem to be any hints as to how to resolve this issue. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to comment on this post. UPDATE: Please see comments below. We had inadvertently activated the Lockout feature as described below. Now that is turned off, the radio is now working normally again.

Right now, I am putting two stars on this purchase, because we really liked them until now. I can't send these back to Amazon, because I am just past the return window for Amazon Warehouse deals. Looks like I will need to send these back to Motorola for service. I will update this review as I go through that process.

UPDATE: July 2017---Changed my rating from 2 stars to 4 stars. Please see comments below. The problem that we were having with our radios was actually the button lockout feature that we accidentally activated. Thanks to another Amazon customer who figured out our problem and posted solution (see comments below.) All 4 walkie talkies that we own are still working wonderfully. A couple of times I have accidentally left them on the charger more than the recommended time period, but so far at least, no issues with the batteries. My kids use these heavily during the summer while playing in our neighborhood and these work great up to 5 blocks away. Next winter, back to the ski slopes and if we have any future cold weather issues, I will update this post.
